Our Story

A family-owned dealership in Kansas City's Northland.

For nearly 40 years, Gladstone Dodge Chrysler Jeep Ram has been part of the fabric of Kansas City's Northland. Since 1987, our family has had the privilege of serving tens of thousands of customers, building relationships that span generations, and working alongside employees who have helped make this dealership what it is today.

Our story is about more than selling cars and trucks. It's about people, hard work, and a family tradition built on a simple belief passed from father to son:

The belief behind our business

People are the most important thing in business.

Built from the ground up

Humble Beginnings

Our story began long before Gladstone Dodge Chrysler Jeep Ram came under the Doherty family's ownership.

Tom Doherty started his automotive career as a mechanic at Dewey Chevrolet in Omaha, Nebraska. From the beginning, he learned the business from the ground up, developing an appreciation for hard work and the people who make a business successful.

He eventually purchased a Mobil gas station, which he successfully operated through the difficult energy crisis of the 1970s. After selling the station, Tom returned to the dealership business, joining Ron Huber at Huber Chevrolet, formerly Dewey Chevrolet. His talent and work ethic quickly earned recognition within the Van Tuyl automotive organization.

In 1981, Tom moved his family to Kansas City when he became a partner with Cecil Van Tuyl in a Datsun dealership.

Six years later, in 1987, Tom purchased what is now Gladstone Dodge Chrysler Jeep Ram, establishing a family business that would become a fixture in the Northland automotive community.

Over the years, Tom built a successful dealership, but perhaps his most lasting accomplishment was the reputation he earned among the people who worked for him.

Even today, one of the things we hear most often from former employees and people who knew him is, “Tom was always a great man to work for.”

For Tom, that was never a small thing. He believed that taking care of people was fundamental to building a successful business. It's a philosophy that continues to guide us today.

The same belief. A new chapter.

The Next Generation

Like many kids who grew up in the car business, Tom's son, Tim Doherty, started at the bottom, washing cars.

But Tim's path into the family business wasn't a straight line. After pursuing his passion for music and spending several years teaching in Texas, he returned to Kansas City in 2001 and began building his own career in the automotive industry.

In 2019, as part of the family's succession planning, Tom retired and Tim assumed leadership of Gladstone DCJR.

While the industry has changed dramatically since Tom first picked up a wrench in Omaha, the fundamental values behind the business have not.

Tim continues to believe that a dealership's greatest asset isn't its buildings, inventory, or equipment. It's the people who work there and the customers who place their trust in them.

The people behind the story

Generations of Customers.
Decades of Loyalty.

Loyalty has to be earned, one customer and one interaction at a time.

32 years

Our longest-tenured employees have served as many as 32 years with the dealership.

One of the things we're most proud of is the number of relationships that have endured over the years.

We've had the privilege of helping generations of Kansas City families purchase and maintain their vehicles. Customers who first visited us decades ago have returned with their children and, in some cases, their grandchildren.

We've watched families grow, celebrated milestones, and welcomed familiar faces back to our showroom and service department year after year.

The same sense of loyalty extends to our employees.

Several members of our team have spent decades with the dealership, with our longest-tenured employees having served as many as 32 years. People like Tony Chambers, Scott Grogg, Chris Gray, and Mike Kampman are among those who have helped build the relationships, knowledge, and continuity that define Gladstone DCJR.

Their dedication reminds us that a dealership isn't simply a place of business. It's a community of people working together, often for much of their professional lives.

And while we're proud of our history, we understand that loyalty is never automatic. It has to be earned, one customer and one interaction at a time.

Our roots run deep

Our Commitment to Kansas City

The Northland isn't just where we do business. It's where we've put down roots.

Over the years, Gladstone DCJR has supported community traditions including Gladfest, the Gladstone Bluesfest, local youth sports, and area school organizations.

Our family's involvement also extends to charitable service. Tim has served on the boards of both the Westport and Northland Salvation Army organizations, and the dealership regularly participates in Christmas fundraising efforts for the Salvation Army and other charitable causes.

We believe being part of a community comes with a responsibility to support it. Sometimes that means sponsoring a local event, helping a school or youth sports team, or contributing to an organization doing important work for our neighbors.

These efforts are simply part of being a good neighbor and giving back to the community that has supported our family for so many years.

Our DRIVE principles

What Drives Us Today

As we look toward the future, we've put our operating philosophy into five principles we call DRIVE:

Development

We never stop learning, improving, and investing in our people.

Results

We measure our success through customer satisfaction, performance, and the value we deliver.

Integrity

We build trust through honesty, transparency, and doing what is right.

Vision

We set ambitious goals and work together to achieve them.

Excellence

We strive to grow our people, our business, and the positive impact we have on our community.

These principles help guide how we work, how we make decisions, and how we treat the people who depend on us.

We don't claim to be perfect. Like any business, we face challenges and have opportunities to improve. What matters is that we continue learning, take responsibility for our work, and strive to do better.

The next chapter

Looking Forward

Nearly four decades after Tom Doherty purchased the dealership, Gladstone Dodge Chrysler Jeep Ram remains a family-owned business serving the community that has supported us since 1987.

We've seen tremendous changes in the automotive industry, in Kansas City, and in the way people buy and service their vehicles. But some things haven't changed.

We still believe in hard work. We still believe in treating people fairly. And we still believe that relationships matter more than any individual transaction.

We're grateful to the employees who've dedicated their careers to Gladstone DCJR, the customers who've trusted us over the years, and the Northland community we're proud to call home.

As we look to the future, our commitment is simple: to honor the foundation Tom built while continuing to earn the trust of the next generation.

Because after nearly 40 years in business, one lesson remains as important as ever: People are the most important thing in business.
